Renowned Napoleon re-enactor admits murdering lover, 24

A distinguished Russian historian best known for his re-enactments of Napoleon has admitted murdering his girlfriend. 63-year-old Oleg Sokolov was found in a river with a backpack containing a young woman's dismembered arms. In court on Monday (November 11), he confessed to shooting dead Anastasia Yeshchenko with a rifle. The postgraduate student was just 24. Sokolov told the court they had been lovers for five years but they argued over his children from another relationship. He said he lost control and shot her four times with a sawn-off shotgun. Sokolov is known for playing Napoleon in battle scenes. His expertise on the emperor earned him a Legion of Honor order of merit from France. But on Saturday (November 9) morning, he was hauled from the icy waters of St Petersburg's Moyka river with a rucksack containing a gun and part of a woman's body. He was treated for hypothermia. The whereabouts of the rest of the victim's body are unknown. The court ruled Sokolov should be held in pre-trial custody for two months.
