Bars shuttered in Thai tourist destination as Covid-19 destroys income

Hundreds of shuttered businesses are seen in Pattaya, eastern Thailand, today (August 31) as the city reels from the effect of Covid-19 of its tourism industry.

The coastal resort - best known for as the 'sex capital of the world' for its nightlife industry - has seen income obliterated by the pandemic.

Government chiefs have kept the country's borders closed since March 22. With no local transmissions of the virus for almost three months, they have successfully prevented the grim figures seen in neighbouring countries.

However, the country's tourism reliant economy accounting for up to 20 per cent of GDP has been shattered - shrinking at its deepest pace since the 1998 Asian crisis.

Footage from Pattaya - once one of the most popular destinations in Asia - shows dozens of closed bars, restaurants, nightclubs and massage parlours with 'for rent' signs as previous tenants have been forced to quit.

While the city's once-busting beach is now eerily quiet - with rental jet skis parked idle and just a handful of locals paddling in the sea.

Health officials are keen to keep the country closed until 2021 but tourism groups are pressuring ministers for gradual re-opening with 'travel bubbles' that allows holidaymakers from other Covid-free countries to visit.

Tourism Authority of Thailand governor Yuthasak Supasorn told local media that officials were still working on re-opening plans but admitted it could be a long time.

He said: ''The principle is already approved by the Prime Minister, but it will take sometime before we can execute it, evaluate it, and expand it to other regions.''

President of Association of Thai Travel Agents Vichit Prakobgosol told Khaosod English that even if the plan was immediately approved, it ''will take some time for hotels and airlines to prepare themselves''.

He added: ''We also have to market it to potential tourists.''

Thailand has recorded zero foreign visitors since April when it imposed a travel ban - a staggering decline compared with 2019 when there were 39.8 million tourist arrivals.

Economists believe the country will lose 1.69 trillion baht in revenues due to the travel restrictions put in place because of the pandemic.

Le gouvernement recommande ainsi à sa population de privilégier le tourisme national

Another South Korean victim of Japan's wartime sexual slavery has died.
According to the The Korean Council for Justice and Remembrance, Lee Mak-dal passed away on Saturday in Busan at the age of 97.
There are now just 16 surviving victims registered with the government.
Lee Mak-dal was forced to serve as so-called 'comfort woman' by the Japanese military in Taiwan at the age of 17.
In 2005, she registered with the government as a victim of wartime sex slavery.
Her funeral is being held privately, in accordance with the wishes of her family.

The namesake of the late Rev. Jimmy Falwell has exited from the evangelical Christian university his father founded.
CNN reports Jerry Falwell Jr. has resigned as president and chancellor of Liberty University.
The news comes a day after reports that the embattled evangelical leader took part in a sexual relationship with his wife and a former hotel pool attendant.
Liberty University's Board of Trustees has accepted Falwell's resignation, and also accepted his resignation from its Board of Directors, effective immediately.
On Monday, the school said Falwell had agreed to resign as Liberty's president. However, Falwell then withdrew his resignation later that day.

The sister of North Korea's leader is now in control of Pyeongyang's ruling Workers' Party.
This was confirmed Tuesday by South Korea's Defense Minister.
He said Kim Yo-jong has been delegated with more power and is wielding ever-increasing power within the regime.

Kim Jong-un's sister, Kim Yo-jong, is sitting in one of the most important political posts in the regime.
Speaking to lawmakers at the National Assembly on Tuesday, South Korea's Defense Minister Jeong Kyeong-doo said Kim Yo-jong has taken over the party's Organization and Guidance Department.
The OGD is responsible for checking around three million party members to ensure they are following the teaching of the North's regime and remain loyal to Kim Jong-un.
Experts also believe Kim Yo-jong has carved out a key role in North Korea.
"Kim Yo-jong, the first deputy director of the department, appears to be a partner in charge of not only the regime's external sectors, but also overall state affairs."
Seoul's defense minister said Kim Yo-jong's official title would be first vice director of the party's Organization and Guidance Department.
And, she has a key role in shaping the North's relationship with South Korea and the U.S.
He added Seoul would respond with military action if the North launched a military provocation against the South.

Malaysia and Singapore will both temporarily suspend their respective port limit extensions that triggered a maritime border dispute last year in order to facilitate negotiations for a settlement.

In a joint press conference by Foreign Affairs Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah and Singapore counterpart Vivian Balakrishnan, both said the suspension was one of five recommendations by the Working Group formed on both sides to resolve the maritime issues. 

On the 1962 Water Agreement, Balakrishnan said the matter had been discussed and that the ministers have differing views on the right to review.

Judge orders Donald Trump to pay Stormy Daniels $44000 in legal fees

A California judge has ordered Donald Trump to pay the adult film actor and director Stormy Daniels $44,100, to cover legal fees in the battle over her non-disclosure agreement (NDA) with the president. Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, says she had an affair with Trump from 2006 until 2007. Trump denies it. Daniels sued in 2018, seeking to be released from an NDA she signed with Trump’s former personal attorney, Michael Cohen, 11 days before the 2016 election. The lawsuit was dismissed as the agreement was deemed unenforceable. Trump’s lawyers said Daniels didn’t win the case and therefore wasn’t entitled to lawyer fees. But Judge Robert Broadbelt III disagreed in his ruling on Monday, which determined Daniels to be the “prevailing party” under California law. The ruling was posted online by Daniels’ lawyers. The White House did not immediately comment. Cohen paid Daniels $130,000. After Trump’s election, she sued to void the agreement. Trump and his supporters denied the president knew about the payment, before Trump acknowledged it in May 2018 and said Cohen had been reimbursed. In court, Trump’s lawyers also argued Daniels didn’t prove the president was a part of the NDA, which was made under the name “David Dennison”. Judge Broadbelt wrote there was a large amount of evidence showing Cohen chose Dennison as a pseudonym for Trump. After her lawyer announced the decision, Daniels wrote on Twitter: “Yup. Another win.”But she has not won every battle with her alleged former paramour. Daniels also sued Trump for defamation after he said on Twitter that a man she said threatened her to stay quiet in 2011 was “nonexistent”. Trump also posted side-by-side photos of the composite sketch of the man and Daniels’ husband. That lawsuit was thrown out. Daniels is appealing the decision and an order to pay Trump almost $300,000 in lawyers’ fees. The judge in that case ruled that Trump’s statements on Twitter were protected speech under the first amendment.

No suspense and the whole thing so unbelievable! Yeah lock up a guy who supposedly rapes the mother and that's not really the reason it's because the dad hits a guy driving drunk and buries him. I fast forwarded thru the court scenes( they really don't add anything) and I figured a few minutes in he was her father. Tho also implausible because she couldn't have been 30. And the cheezy dialogue especially from the brother and the mother barely talks and when she does it's likes she's drugged up all the time. Pass on this . I've seen Simon Peg in a few things and he is a good actor. Why he took this roll is beyond me.
