GLAAD premia a la Agencia EFE por reportaje sobre una eminencia transgénero

Los Ángeles (EE.UU.), 30 jul (EFE).- GLAAD, la principal organización de Estados Unidos de defensa de los derechos de las personas LGBTQ, otorgó este jueves un premio a un equipo de la Agencia EFE, liderado por el periodista David Casasús, por un reportaje sobre una bióloga transgénero, Brigitte Baptiste, que es una eminencia en su especialidad en Colombia.
"El encanto de la historia del reportaje con Brigitte fue la naturalidad que desprendió. Quería que Europa y Latinoamérica vieran que ella se levanta, va al baño y vive su día a día como una persona totalmente normal, con su familia", explica Casasús, ahora en Madrid, en una entrevista con Efe.
Así, el reportaje "América a Fondo: Brigitte Baptiste, el Rostro de la (bio) Diversidad", realizado por el propio Casasús y el videógrafo Juan Diego López, recibió el galardón "Sobresaliente Periodismo Digital en Español- Vídeo o Multimedia" de GLAAD.
La historia contada por Casasús en septiembre del año pasado se centra en la figura de Brigitte, doctora en Biología, activista por los derechos LGTBI en Colombia y rectora de la Universidad EAN en Bogotá.
En la adolescencia, Brigitte se dio cuenta de la contradicción entre su cuerpo y su mente. Fue a los 13 años cuando no quería jugar al fútbol y se sentía mejor en las actividades de las niñas, pero no fue hasta los 35 cuando empezó a hacer el cambio transgénero.
En Colombia, los niños transgénero suelen sufrir limitaciones de sus derechos, incluso a veces con la expulsión del colegio o el uso de mecanismos indirectos para sacar a los menores de la institución.
"La educación de las personas transgénero depende mucho de las políticas del colegio, depende de la voluntad que manifiesten de apoyar a las personas que expresen diversidad de género", afirmó la bióloga en el reportaje premiado.
El autor de "América a Fondo: Brigitte Baptiste, el Rostro de la (bio) Diversidad" reconoce que le sorprendió la repercusión y el éxito que tuvieron tanto el texto como el vídeo en el momento de la publicación, y ahora se muestra "muy agradecido" por el reconocimiento de GLAAD.
"Esto es un subidón importante para mí en un año complicado a nivel personal, así que estoy muy agradecido", agrega.
GLAAD, en su labor de defensa de los derechos de las personas LGBTQ, desde hace 30 años entrega unos galardones que premian aquellos trabajos que representan de manera justa e inclusiva al colectivo, tanto en prensa como en cine y televisión.
Entre los nominados en categorías de lengua española figuran éxitos como la serie "Élite" de Netflix, "Amar a Muerte" de Univisión y "Los Espookys" de HBO.
También recibieron menciones trabajos de Radio Televisión Española y la cadena estadounidense CNN en Español.
Por su parte, en lengua inglesa series candidatas al Emmy como "Pose", "Euphoria", "One Day at a Time", "Sex Education" y "RuPaul's Drag Race" y cintas reconocidas en los Óscar como "Judy" y "Bombshell" forman parte de esta edición de los premios, cuya gala no ha podido ce

Govt to scrap petrol subsidy programme (PSP)

Deputy Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Rosol Wahid on Wednesday said that the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government decided not to follow through with the petrol subsidy programme (PSP) as introduced by the previous administration.

Rosol said the government made the decision after considering the price difference of fuel between the peninsula and East Malaysia.

He said this in response to a question by Setiu MP Shaharizukirnain Abd Kadir who asked when would the PSP come into place after it postponed by the Cabinet.

Defector May Have Just Brought COVID to North Korea

NORTH KOREA — North Korea promises to protect its citizens from outside forces, but perhaps the coronavirus may pose the biggest risk to the hermit kingdom.

Pyongyang's mouthpiece, KCNA reported that supreme leader Kim Jong Un hastily assembled an emergency meeting on July 25 after reports of a potentially infected defector — who fled the country three years prior — return to the city of Kaesong.

On July 27 South Korean authorities confirmed the crossing of the highly militarized border, but the Health Ministry said that the man was not a known coronavirus patient. The reason for his return is unconfirmed, however, South Korean police said the man was being investigated for a sex crime.

KCNA claimed the defector had symptoms of the virus, however, they did not declare whether or not he had been tested. The state-run outlet warned of an impending disaster, saying that a 'dangerous situation' was developing that could lead to a 'deadly and destructive disaster.'

North Korea had since claimed that there were no cases of the deadly virus within the country, despite a population of nearly 25 million people; leading to the possibility that Kim Jong Un's regime simply did not identify cases due to the lack of testing.

If the returning defector does test positive, resulting in a major outbreak, it could pose the biggest test to Kim's ruling of nearly nine years.

It's also conceivable that a positive result could be used as a means of propaganda. Pyongyang has so far claimed that it has protected its people from the virus by reporting zero cases, but if a man returning from the South is infected, Kim has reason to point out their failings.

Kim Jong-un adopts 'maximum emergency system' after defector returns with COVID-19 symptoms

North Korea has imposed a 'maximum emergency system' over a suspected COVID-19 case which, if confirmed, would be the first officially recognized case in North Korea.

North Korea shifted its state emergency anti-epidemic system to the "maximum emergency sytem" and issued a top-class alert over the weekend.
The decision was reached at an emergency politburo meeting of the Workers' Party on Saturday that was convened by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, in response to a defector returning to North Korea from South Korea with COVID-19 symptoms.
The North's state-run Korean Central News Agency reported Sunday that the defector had illegally trespassed the Military Demarcation Line to Gaeseong on July 19th,…three years after defecting to South Korea.
The 24-year-old is believed to have swum back to the North after being investigated for rape allegations in the South, according to multiple media reports in South Korea.
It added that multiple medical check-ups of the man's upper respiratory organ and blood were conducted, which showed an uncertain result that can be described as a suspected case of coronavirus,...the first in North Korea.
The man has been quarantined along with people that came into contact with him for five days in Gaeseong.
The city has been on a complete lockdown since Friday, when Kim Jong-un was first notified about the matter.
At the politburo meeting, Kim launched an investigation into how the man managed to cross the border and said those responsible would be severely punished.
North Korea closed its border in late January to prevent an outbreak of COVID-19 and had so far claimed to have zero cases.
The regime has been emphasizing the need to always wear face masks and strictly practice virus prevention measures.

Suh Choo Suk, a former vice defense minister, has been tapped as the Deputy Director of National Security.
He'll also double as the chief of the secretariat of the National Security Council.
Do Jae-hyung, professor at Ewha Womans University's school of law, was been named the new secretary for employment and labor.
Ha Dong-soo, in charge of housing policy at the land ministry, is tapped for secretary for land, infrastructure and transport.
Yoo Geun-heag, in charge of population policy at the health ministry, was picked as secretary for social policy.
Yeo Han-koo, a senior official at the trade ministry, was chosen as secretary for New Southern and New Northern policies.
The top office cited their relevant expertise for the appointments.

Le tribunal de commerce de Lille doit examiner les offres de reprises de Camaïeu qui, déjà plombée avant la crise sanitaire, n'a pas résisté au confinement et a été placée fin mai en redressement judiciaire. L'enjeu est important : limiter le nombre de licenciements (plus de 4.700 salariés, dont 3.900 en France) et de fermetures de magasins (au nombre de 634 aujourd'hui).

Deux offres de reprise ont en effet été présentées aux représentants syndicaux.

Celle du management actuel, prévoit de reprendre 446 magasins, dont 43 seront sous l'enseigne de prêt-à-porter féminin de la galaxie Mulliez, Grain de malice, et associe le logisticien nordiste Log's. Soit 2.520 emplois selon un porte-parole du porteur de l'offre.

Selon ce dernier, l'entreprise compte actuellement 3.134 salariés. Interrogée début juillet, la direction de Camaïeu faisait elle état de 3.900 salariés, mais a précisé jeudi que ces chiffres dataient en réalité de "fin 2019" et comptabilise finalement "3.146 salariés au 15 juillet 2020, dont 2.708 dans les magasins et 438 à Roubaix, répartis entre les bureaux et l'entrepôt logistique. L'autre offre de reprise émane de la Foncière immobilière bordelaise (FIB), fonds d'investissement spécialisé dans l'immobilier commercial de l'homme d'affaires Michel Ohayon.

"L'offre de (la) FIB c'est 511 magasins repris, 2.659 salariés au total (magasin, siège et entrepôt). Ce qui nous bloque, c'est le plan de financement. Il y a 20 millions d'euros en fonds propres de promesse non séquestrés.

De l'autre côté, on a une garantie avec les 30 millions d'euros séquestrés. Reprendre plus de monde c'est bien, mais si c'est pour revivre ça dans un an...", a ajouté M. Nguyen.

Some U.S. politicians are voicing concerns on reports the White House might cut the number of U.S. troops stationed in South Korea.
Former U.S. Ambassador to South Korea, Christopher Hill said in an interview with VOA on Monday that he thought it's a "very bad idea",... and is music to the ears of the North Koreans.
He added it could suggest to the Chinese that the U.S. is making a strategic withdrawal,... and would send the wrong message to Japan.
On Sunday, Ami Bera, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific and Nonproliferation at the House Foreign Affairs Committee, retweeted the Wall Street Journal's recent report on the plans,... saying it would be "irresponsible."

Some U.S. politicians are voicing concerns on reports the White House might cut the number of U.S. troops stationed in South Korea.
Representative Ami Bera, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific and Nonproliferation at the House Foreign Affairs Committee, tweeted the Wall Street Journal's recent report on the plans,... saying it would be "irresponsible."
He added the U.S.' partnership with South Korea not only ensures peace and prosperity in the region, but protects American security.
Senator Ben Sasse said it would be "strategic incompetence."
The Wall Street Journal reported last Friday that the Pentagon has presented the White House with options to reduce the American military presence in South Korea as their defense cost sharing negotiations remain in stalemate.

The U.K. says it's indefinitely suspending its extradition pact with Hong Kong,... after China passed its controversial national security law for the territory.
On top of that, the British government will also extend its arms embargo against China to Hong Kong.

Addressing parliament on Monday,... the U.K.'s Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said Britain is indefinitely suspending its extradition pact with Hong Kong.
He called the recently enacted national security law imposed by China as "a clear and serious violation of the U.K.-China joint declaration",... which gave rise to the 1997 Handover.
He added the new measures were a necessary and proportionate response to the new law.
In addition to the suspension of the extradition pact,... Raab said the U.K. will extend its arms embargo against China to Hong Kong,... meaning there will be no exports of weapons from the U.K. to Hong Kong of potentially lethal weapons and ammunition.
He added the decision will also mean a ban on any equipment,... that could be used for "internal repression",... such as shackles, firearms and smoke grenades.
Even before Raab's announcements,... China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin addressed reporters in Beijing on Monday,... accusing the U.K. of "brutal" meddling in China's internal affairs,...and urged the British government to stop its "wrong words and actions".
He also urged the U.K. to avoid further damage to China-U.K. relations.
After China enacted the national security law on Hong Kong,... the U.K. has announced several measures,... such as extending residency rights for Hong Kong citizens with British National Overseas passports.
It also pledged to stop using telecommunications gear manufactured by China's tech giant Huawei for the country's 5G infrastructure,... citing security concerns.
